Whether a mineral deposit can ever be exploited commercially depends on several factors. But the major factor which finally decides if a mineral deposit will ever be exploited is the technical ability of the engineer to produce saleable products at a socially acceptable cost.

In order to establish whether or not such saleable products can be produced, the mineral engineer must have (among other things) large amounts of accurate, readily available geochemical and mineralogical data concerning the deposit.

The enormous value of detailed geochemical and mineralogical data becomes apparent at every stage in the exploration of a mineral deposit – from its location by a geological exploration team to its final exhaustion by mining.

Although the analytical procedures and facilities available in the Agency’s Research & Development Laboratories are directed primarily towards the investigation of minerals and mineral based materials, they are also ideally suited for identifying pharmaceuticals, metals, alloys, slag and cements.
